Week 18 Highlights

Dear beloved students and parents,

Merry, Merry Christmas! I want to thank the students who still put in their 100% into their classes and assignments even though it's Christmas week. You truly are an autonomous learner. Anyways, here are this week's highlights. Please enjoy :)

  • In Reading Class, both 402 and 403 students read Lesson 15 in the SC Journeys book about frogs. We've learned about 2 particular species of frogs, which are wood frog and bull frogs. Do you remember which of the frog's croak resembles a foghorn? That's right! A bull frog sounds like a foghorn. We've also learned that wood frogs are delicate creatures, which means that we must take extra measures to protect and conserve the wetlands. Many students seemed to be intrigued about frogs in class.
  • In Grammar, we learned Unit 11 about the 'Present Simple Tense.' Please, please, please remember that WE DON'T ADD -ING TO VERBS IN THE PRESENT SIMPLE TENSE. The present simple tense is specifically used to talk about habits and actions that we do regularly. Therefore, if you see adverbs of frequency such as 'never, rarely, sometimes, often, usually, and always,' ALWAYS use the present simple tense! This is a trick for you to use in your exams next week!
  • In Math, we learned about solving word problems. There are 4 steps to problem solving. First, you must thoroughly understand the problem. For example, what's happening in the problem? What do the numbers in the problem represent? Second, you must plan what to do. Are you going to multiply or divide first? Are you going to add or subtract first? Why? Third, you have to work out the answer. Execute your plan. Lastly, you must check your answer(s).
  • We didn't get a chance to learn science this week because of the Fire Department. However, we will be reviewing science next Monday before we have exams.
Because the students had to take lessons with the Fire Department all morning on Friday this week, as well as having the Christmas Party, our class schedule was a little tighter than usual, which is why we took our spelling and grammar quiz on Thursday instead of Friday. I want to thank all students who really hustled through with me and tried your best to learn. I really appreciate that! Anyways, that's a wrap for this week! I really can't believe that our Unit 3 Exams are coming up next week. Please rest well and study hard!

Best,
Ms. Wendy

Week 17 Highlights

Dear beloved students and parents,

Another week has flew by and I can't believe that I'm writing another 'Highlights' post! Anyways, I hope you enjoy reading this week's highlights:

  • In Reading, my 402 students learned about ants. Did you know that ants can lift objects that are five times their weight? Even elephants can't do that! As for my 403 students, we learned a lot about bees. Did you know that bees make honey by taking excess water out of the nectar?
  • In Writing, we wrote our last persuasive essay of the year. I urged all students to give in their 110% because they must end this year strong with an excellent essay.. and you know what? All of you did! I have to say that I'm impressed with the effort you all have put in to this week's essay. The students wrote about why we shouldn't have Good Morning English. Most students pointed out that we should do other productive things (such as writing homework and studying) instead of doing Good Morning English.
  • In Grammar, we continued to learn about the present progressive tense. The trickiest part about present progressive tense is making sure that the spelling is correct. For example, if the infinitive ends with 1 vowel + 1 consonant (such as 'run'), you must double the last consonant and add -ing when changing it into the present progressive form. I've created a worksheet for students to practice so that they could sharpen their saws and all of them did superb.
  • In Math, we learned about the product of fractions and whole numbers. I didn't have to explain too much to them as they are already quite familiar with this content from their Chinese Math Class.
  • In Science, we learned about the properties of light. Do you remember what's the difference between transparent, translucent, and opaque objects?
Finally, I'd like to update and remind ALL of you that we will be having a Christmas Party on Friday, December 27th. Because of the party, we will be having our Spelling and Grammar Test on Thursday, December 26th next week. Please make sure to bring a gift if you would like to participate in Secret Santa. I will prepare a small snack for each student. However, you are more than welcome to bring snacks to share with everyone if you wish. Alright! I think that's all for this week. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns regarding the Christmas Party.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

L14 Vocabulary Study Tool- Quizlet

Happy Thursday, everyone!

Here is the link to the this week's vocabulary on Quizlet. I suggest you (student) to download the Quizlet app onto your phone if you haven't already. When you're waiting for someone or waiting for your food to be served at a restaurant, using Quizlet is an effortless way to study. This way, you wouldn't have to cram all the studying the night before your test!

Here are some tips for studying vocabulary
  1. Round 1: start with the side that has the vocabulary word first and say the definition out loud to yourself. If you're in public, just say it in your mind. Try to remember the spelling of the word in Round 1.
  2. Round 2: start with the side that has the definition first and spell out the vocabulary before you click to flip the flashcard over. Make sure that you've spelled it correctly.
  3. Round 3: do Round 2 again but also compose a sentence for each vocabulary
If you have trouble memorizing certain words, I suggest you to find pictures to help you remember. Instead of just memorizing the word, seek to understand its meaning through context.

Happy Studying!

Week 16 Highlights

Howdy, everyone!

Another busy week has passed by and I would like to share with you some memorable highlights:

In Reading, we learned about Earnest Shackleton and his crew who went on a life-threatening expedition. They were stranded on the Antarctic for months without adequate food and water. Frank Hurley, a zealous photographer, dived into the freezing water just to salvage his photographic plates when the ship sank during the journey. Crazy, right?! Anyways, all students seemed to agree that Earnest Shackleton was a courageous leader who was persistent in saving his crew from the bitter cold.

In Writing, we wrote persuasive essays explaining why students should be allowed to use electronic devices in class. I am impressed that many students mentioned that using electronics would be more environmentally friendly as we wouldn't have to use up so much paper for notebooks and textbooks. I also want to thank all students for putting their best into writing even though this may be a tedious task. Please keep up the good work!

In Grammar, we started a new unit about 'Present Progressive Tense.' Almost all of the students still remember what they've learned from third and second grade so this was a piece of cake for them! Even though many students found this unit a little easier than the others, they were all diligent in completing the exercises in their Grammar books. Good job, folks. Really.

In Math, we learned about adding and subtracting fractions. Please remember to make sure the denominators are the same before adding or subtracting the fractions.

In Science, we learned about electrical, kinetic, and potential energy. This unit was more difficult than the last so the students struggled to remember some new terms that were mostly unfamiliar to them. Please, please, please, remember that kinetic energy is moving energy whereas potential energy is stored energy. Do you remember the 3 ways that Kinetic Energy could be used? What are the 3 types of potential energy? (The answers are at the bottom of this blog post). I plan to make a Quizlet for this unit in order for students to review so I would advise you to keep an eye on my blog!

As for our English Assembly, I've chose Jaden Huang to be our Lih-Jen Angel. Even though most of the students did superb this past week, Jaden really stood out. He has been attentive and proactive in class. He respects his teachers and his peers. Thank you for being our role model, Jaden! Furthermore, I'd like to thank Luke for putting in his best effort to do the speech for Jaden. He had to say very difficult words such as 'altruistic and 'academic achiever.' I am genuinely impressed, Luke :)

I'd also like to give a shout out to all of you for dancing so fantastically at the talent show. I definitely am not able to dance like you. I wish I were good at dancing!

That's a wrap for this week folks! Again, please rest well this week. Christmas is coming soon so don't be naughty! You wouldn't want to be in Santa's Black Book.

Love,
Ms. Wendy

Dear Parents,

Happy holidays! Christmas is nearly upon us!
As part of our yearly Christmas celebration, we would like to extend an
invitation to take pictures with Santa! This invitation is open to any of our students'
siblings and neighbors that are still too young for school (ages 0-3). Taking pictures
with Santa has become a big hit at Lih-Jen during the past couple years, and
everyone always has a blast!

All parents are invited to bring your little ones to school on December 24
from 8:00 to 8:30 am. We’ll designate 12/24 for elementary school students to
bring their younger brother and sister to take a family photo with Santa. There will
be a designated "Santa's Corner" onstage, complete with a sofa and cozy
decorations.

Lih-Jen will provide photography and post the photos on our website, but
parents are welcome to bring their own cameras. Feel free to dress up as well!
We wish you all a merry Christmas and a happy New Year!

Week 15 Highlights

Dear beloved Parents and Students,

Happy Friday! Here are this week's highlights:

  • In reading, my 402 class read 'The Earth Dragon Awakes' from the Hard Cover book. Can you guess that the story is about? ..... yes! Earthquakes! It is about the violent earthquake that happened in San Francisco in 1906. The author used many similes in the story in order to enhance the descriptive visualization for the reader. My 402 students are starting to understand more about the purpose of similes. As for my 403 class, they learned more about Earth's land forms and the science behind the formation of mountains and earthquakes.
  • In Grammar, we continued to learn about 'imperatives.' It is imperative that all of you only use the infinitive when using imperatives! Did that confuse you? Well, I hope you know what imperative and infinitive means! (Hint: 'Sit properly' is an example of an imperative) I also had students write a 'Recipe for a Successful Student' by using imperatives. Some ingredients include brains, eyes, and even an avocado!
  • In Math, we continued to learn about improper fractions and mixed numbers. Many students told me that they've already learned about this in their Chinese Math Class so it's not too challenging. However, when something isn't too challenging, many tend to make more silly mistakes, so, watch out!
  • In Science, we learned about light, heat, and sound energy. It will get even more interesting next week as we will learn about kinetic and potential energy. Stay tuned!
  • As for writing, every student wrote a full essay about why they think we should have shorter school days/ why Lih-Jen shouldn't have a dress code. I'm surprised to find out that many think that the uniforms make them so itchy that it's preventing them from concentrating in class! Are you (students) exaggerating? Hmm....
  • Finally, I would like to give a shout out to Koki and Henry for giving such marvelous Christmas speeches in our Thursday Assembly. Henry shared that he really wants a Krito Costume for Christmas. It's my first time learning about Krito, who is kind of like a gamer! As for Koki, he shared that he wishes to have an arm scratcher for Christmas because when he broke his arm, he couldn't scratch it for 1 month due to his cast! I know it's terrifying to give a speech in front of others but both of you did superb. I'm so proud of you two!
Well, that's a wrap for another week. I seriously can't believe that 2020 is right around the corner. Let's end this year strong together. The weather's also getting much cooler so stay warm, everyone!

Best,
Ms. Wendy
