Summer Vacation Homework

Hi everyone,

Guess what?! It's summer time! I know that most of you are fed up with homework but summer vocation homework isn't really homework. It's more like a fun project that you can share with your friends and family. If you make a video for your homework, please make sure to share it with your fifth grade teacher next year. It's a fun way for you to introduce yourself to your new teacher next year. And of course, please incorporate the 7 Habits into your homework. Even though summer is a time to relax, it's also a time to exercise the 7 habits to grow continuously. I mean, none of us are getting younger!

I hope that all of you will stay safe as you have a blast this summer! I will miss you all so so much.
Love,
Ms. Wendy

Fun Awards for Everyone! You did it!

Hi everyone!

I cannot believe that this is the end of fourth grade! The past couple weeks slipped by without notice. While I'm thrilled that every single student conquered fourth grade like little heroes, I am also feeling sad that I won't be able to teach them next year. It's always a bittersweet feeling at the end of the school year. Anyways, I gave a fun award to each student based on their behavior and personality that I've seen throughout fourth grade. Please enjoy the pictures below!

Week 17 Highlight Week 18 Printout

Dear beloved parents and students,

Despite the extra day of school, this week has still flown by and here's what happened:

  • In Journeys, we finished our very last lesson! It was about a family trip that took place at the Everglades, in Florida. The Everglades is an area of swamp where alligators dwell. Crocodiles, on the other hand, prefer to stay in saltwater. We learned that a house boat is literally like a mini house because it has beds, kitchen, and a bathroom. How cute!
  • In Creative Writing, my 403 class wrote their last expository writing of their choice of topic. A student wrote about Roblox, a game in which I've never heard of when I was a kid 😆Another student wrote about 'How to write homework faster' and his tip included 'writing smaller' and 'having a good brain' 😂
  • In Math, we learned to choose the most suitable type of graph (between line graph and bar graph), to represent data. A line graph is most suitable when the data involves a change over time. A bar graph is most suitable for comparing different groups and categories.
  • As for grammar and science, we've already completed all units since last week so we started making study flashcards for the final exam. You may also access the e-version of the flashcards here.
  • And of course, we went on a field trip! Even though we were trapped in the scorching heat, the students seemed to have a blast and the best part is that everyone returned to school safely with all arms and legs attached to their bodies! Woohoo! I hope you guys enjoy some of the pictures below.

That's a wrap for this week! Here is next week's printout:

I hope that all of you get plenty of rest and study hard! Also, don't forget about the solar eclipse that's happening this Sunday!

Week 16 Highlights Week 17 Printout

Dear beloved parents and students,

Can you believe it? We have 1 more week of this unit before we review for the exams! We can finally approaching the finish line. So, here's what happened this week:

  • In Journeys, we read about the Mojave Desert. We've learned that a cactus has a thick and waxy exterior because it helps hold the water in. All cacti are adapted to the desert life. We've also learned that most desert animals come out at night because it's cooler.
  • In Creative Writing, we continued to write expository essays. My 403 class wrote a 4 paragraph essay about 'How to be a proactive student' whereas my 402 class wrote about various topics such as 'How to survive 4th grade,' '3 things you must know about Krito,' 'How to choose your best NBA player,' and 'How to do gymnastics.' I'm actually impressed of the knowledge that the students have of the things they are interested in. They are like little pundits!
  • In Grammar, we finished Unit 21 about the Future Tense 'Will.' We use this tense in 4 major conditions: when we predict, about to do something at the moment, promise something, or threaten someone. This unit was quite easy so both 402 and 403 took the same version of the grammar quiz.
  • In Math, we learned how to draw and analyze line graphs. While this wasn't challenging, this unit required students to be detail-oriented and utilize their analytical skills. Please remember that any unit that is related to time such as 'minutes, weeks, or months,' will always be located on the horizontal axis of the graph.
  • In Science, we finished Unit 24 about the Solar System. We also learned about the 4 big gas giants, which are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Do you remember which planet has the fastest orbit? Which planet would be able to float on water, and which planet is the furthest away from the sun? Our solar system is just so glorious and magnificent. There is a plethora of information about space. If you have an interesting resource, please feel to share it with our class!
That's a wrap for this week. Our Unit 3 Exams, which is also our VERY LAST EXAM IN 4TH GRADE will be on June 23rd and 24th. You may access the e-version of the exam scope here. I urge all of you to get a head start in studying in order to be proactive! Alright, here is next week's printout:

Have a wonderful weekend,
Ms. Wendy

Week 15 Highlights Week 16 Printout

Hi Everyone!

Is it just me or does it really seem like the weeks are getting shorter and shorter? It's ironic because our Earth's rotation is actually slowing down each century due to tidal friction. Weird, right? Anyways, here's what happened this week:

  • In Journeys, we read Lesson 28 about the Natural History Museum at Washington, D.C. I was excited to find out that 1 of my students (Bomin) from 403 actually visited this museum! We learned that most items from this Museum was bought from other Museums and that they expanded their dinosaur exhibit in order to show the dinosaur's vast habitat.
  • In Writing, we expanded our essays about being a proactive student. I really have to say each student has matured significantly has young writers.
  • In Grammar, we finished Unit 20 about the Future Tense 'going to.' This unit wasn't new for most students so we breezed through it. Please remember that we use the future tense 'going to' for 2 main purposes: 1) intention, and 2) prediction. However, the real challenge is to apply these grammar rules in real life. So, what are you going to do to improve your English proficiency?
  • In math, we learned about symmetrical figures. If you're not sure whether an object is symmetrical or not, try to fold it in half and see if both halves match exactly. An object is symmetrical only if both halves are exactly identical. For this reason, the letter 'S' ISN'T symmetrical. If you still aren't sure, try to draw 'S' on a piece of paper and fold it in half.
  • In Science, we learned about the rotation of the earth and moon. It takes Earth 24 hours to make 1 rotation and 365 days to make 1 revolution. As for the moon, it takes 28 days... which is where we get our months from!
And... yep! That's a wrap for this week. It's getting quite hot and humid and heat exhaustion is real so please make sure to hydrate!

Here is next week's printout:

Let's make the most of the last month of 4th Grade together!

Week 14 Highlights Week 15 Printout

Dear students and parents,

I think all students should give yourself a pat on your back for finishing both English and Chinese Exams! I cannot imagine having to study for big tests in two different languages. It's a pretty huge accomplishment. Here's what happened this week:

  • In Journeys, everyone read Lesson 27 about the Life of a Pond. We learned that an ecosystem is a community of plants and animals in one place. All life forms, whether small or big, are crucial as they are all part of a food chain. If one of the species dies out, it would cause imbalance and eventually lead to an unhealthy pond. This is why every single animal plays a role in maintain a balanced ecosystem!
  • In grammar, we finished Unit 19 about modal verbs that include can, can't, could, couldn't, must, and mustn't. Because you've had to take big exams in the past couple weeks. All of you must rest and eat nourishing food this weekend so that you can have enough energy to learn next week!
  • For 402A, we got a head start in expository writing, which our last unit in creative writing. They all wrote about 'how to be a good student' and I am actually impressed of their maturity in their knowledge of being a proactive student. Good job, 402!
  • In math, we finished word problems from pages 106-108. While the arithmetic work in these problems are relatively simple, there were multiple steps in the word problems. For this reason, many students who missed a step got the whole answer wrong! So, please read the problems carefully!
  • In science, we started learning about the rotation of the earth and moon. We learned that the earth rotates on its own axis. When the earth rotates around the sun once, it's called a revolution. We also learned about the lunar cycle where the shape of the Moon that we see from Earth depends on how much of the lighted part of the Moon is facing the Earth.
  • We also took a Lesson 26& 27 Vocabulary Quiz and a Unit 19 Grammar Quiz! Whew! So many tests within 2 weeks. The good thing is that it's over! Well done, everyone.
That's a wrap for this week. Here's next week's printout:

Have a restful weekend!

Week 13 Highlights Week 14 Printout

Hi everyone!

Kudos for conquering your Unit 2 Exams! I am honestly very proud of each and every one of you, even if you are not fully satisfied with your scores. Remember, numbers DO NOT define you! Here's what happened this week:
  • On Monday and Tuesday, we reviewed for the Unit 2 exams. I asked students to make flashcards and all were diligent in studying from them! On Wednesday and Thursday, the students conquered the exams. We also got a head start in Journeys Lesson 26 because we only have 5 weeks to complete Unit 3. And... that's it! I hope you all rest well this weekend and eat a nourishing diet! Here's next week's printout:
